Although you can choose a template within Wix, there is also another option to build your own, which is what I exactly did after looking more into domain prices (Wix has the best price plan for myself). I took inspiration from the last layout I used on Adobe Portfolio and started building in Wix again. It doesn’t look exactly the same but it is very similar, which I am personally happy with as it still shows off who I am (which is important for marketing). See images below to see my final website;
My next step will be to purchase the domain to make it purely my own website with no adverts. The portfolio link will then be placed on my CV and Cover Letter to let employers show what work I am capable of creating.
After realisation that there wasn’t anything unique by using a template that would have already been used by thousands of people, I wanted to create my own look on my website with a layout made by myself. I was recommended Adobe Portfolio by a graphics student so I decided to give it a go. There was a lot more uniqueness about this website builder as I got more inspiration to create my own look. All of the the content on this new website was created by me within Adobe Photoshop, a program I have got significantly used to in the last couple of months due to a heavily based previous competition brief.
After a lot of experimentation I later realised it wasn’t cheap to buy a domain for this website. I would have had to buy the whole adobe suite to get my moneys worth and on top of that, extra fees would have to be payed for my own domain. This was a lack of research by me, which I have later learnt from as I have now got a final website created on another website inspired by the layout I created this Adobe Portfolio (see next post).
I wanted to re-create my portfolio on a new website that I haven’t used before, and Website Builder was a high recommendation within forums on the internet. I started from scratch with the intentions of creating an eye catching website to promote myself as a brand, so a home page that stood out straight away when you go onto the website is important as that’s the first thing the user/employer sees;
A downfall to this website builder was that you had to upgrade to premium to upload more than one video, as most of my portfolio is video based it wasn’t the best option to use Website Builder. I later realised that using a template can be limiting to what you can create, which was a problem for me as I am naturally creative and want to be unique (see next post).
After discussions with my tutor, I decided to move around the posters and create the graphic on the left hand side as it’s the first thing you see on the poster and people may wonder how it’s made by looking to the right of the objects. Here is the outcome of each poster;
To make my portfolio my own copyright, I have looked in to buying a domain on Wix. The most likely domain I will purchase is the ‘Entrepreneurs and Freelancers’ package that includes many advantages such as your domain, ad vouchers, remove Wix adverts etc. This all comes at just £7.76 per month which would easily be affordable when in full time work.
A README file is a text file containing information for the user about the software program, utility, or game. README files typically contain instructions and additional help as well as details about patchesor updates.
A ReadMe outlines:
What the project does
Why the project is useful
How users can get started with the project
Where users can get help with your project
Who maintains and contributes to the project
The professionals within my career goals will know the link to my website
A lot of jobs and recruitment nowadays is online and upon any requests, I could create a ReadMe file for my portfolio but it is not necessary at this moment in time. A link to my portfolio could be placed on various social media platforms and my CV which will help clients/employers seek the work I have created and send them straight to the portfolio.
Educating potential clients of what type of work I have produced over several years can save time when first contacting them;
“Giving the client an opportunity to view your work at their leisure allows them to learn about you in a comfortable setting. When an educated client contacts you, they know what your work looks like and they have decided to do business with you because of this. It can be quite settling to know that the work you’re doing is exactly what’s expected of you. Having a great online portfolio makes for better qualified initial contacts”. (John Furness, 2015)
Keeping your work up to date online is important when maintaining an online presence. This can motivate you to keep yourself current and active within the professional field you are working in and over time, may show a wide range of skills you possess.
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Search engine optimisation can make your work accessible through many search engines for indexing within their databases.
“This can significantly help with SEO. If a person performs a search for who was the architect responsible for designing a particular building – your website will come up in the results. This works for any industry – if you produce a product or provide a service that someone is looking for and you’re not online there’s a really slim chance that an online search will lead them to you”. (John Furness, 2015)
Personal Brand Identity
Research shows that one of the first things an employer does when they look at your resume is to search you online. By creating your own online identity you are the one with control over what companies and clients see when they search you. Personal customisation can really help you define and show off your own brand personality.
Within today’s session we created a space scene within Adobe After Effects. This consisted of downloading textures and modelling them into 3-D spheres to create an earth. Fractal noise was used to create the stars, by adjusting the settings accordingly and playing around with them. We were then asked to create a nebulae effect by figuring it out ourself. I added a new fractal noise on to a new solid layer and masked around the edges, and then added a feather to eliminate the sharp edges. Colour balance was added later to add the purple colour effect to make it more realistic.
